ONLY IN COLORADO CAN YOU SKI EIGHT INCHES OF POW IN APRIL!!!!!!!!!! Henry made the plan to go ski near Montezuma after he got out of school with his friend Dana, I asked to tag along! We started at 12:30, it was partly cloudy, partly sunny, sorta snowing, sorta nice. The Peru creek drainage is unreal when it comes to ski-able lines, there are just so many! Henry wanted to ski high voltage a line off of Mt Morgan but I had to veto that idea. With the top of the line being all wind blown and rocks for a base I didn't thing it would be safe, even thought about 10 people skied it a few days ago. Also CAIC reported that the line next to it (Corkscrew) slide on April 1st, it has the same aspect and winded loading patterns. We decided to look to are south west and saw a awesome line off of the SW ridge of Mt Lenaweee. Up we went, 2,500 vertical feet in about a mile, we killed it. When we got to the top it was all serious, where should we go, snow conditions, safe zones, and red flags. It was very similar to my plan on Mt Trelease, wind slab on SE facing side meaning stay away and ski the SW facing side. The eight inches of fresh where resting on a 4 inch freeze thaw layer, this meant no deep persistent slab to worry about. Bond between the dirty freeze thaw layer and the wind slab was alright, not bomber though. (I think the dust froze to the freeze thaw layer on S aspects the night it came in. Then when it warmed up today it heated the layer from inside the snow pack, bonding the new snow to the old dirty snow. Normally it wouldn't heat up, keeping the new snow / wind slab dry and light, IDK I AM NOT A SNOW SCIENTIST, just me thoughts!) No red flags equaled, DROPPING! We leapfrogged down the 2,500 vertical foot slide path, floating up and down in the knee deep pow. All you could here was hooting and hollering as we each stopped at are safe zones and watched the other person float on by. |
