Since i was by myself today i thought i would go out on a recon mission into humbug to see how hard and how long the approach would be to climb Pacific peak from this side. I ended up getting to the bottom of Pacific in just under an hour. It was still early in the day and cold so i went farther into the basin. I new there was a line off Atlantic called the NW Passage so i decided to go to the bottom of it and check out the snow conditions. "EVEN THOUGHT ITS SPRING ON THE CALENDER ITS NOT SPRING IN THE SNOW PACK!" CAIC avi danger for this area was level 2 with the danger on north threw south-east aspects, deep slab avalanches being the danger. With the snow still cold and knowing that the my biggest concerns was going to be wind loading (not deep slabs) i took my skis off and started to kick steps. With us being in a high pressure system and no new snow in the last 72 hours there was not a lot of wind loading so i kept going. About half way up the snow got so hard i had to switch to crampons. When i got to the top i had some food and water and new i had to wait a little for the sun to do its work. I made the call to drop and had 1,000 vertical feet of 50 degree corn skiing! I got to the bottom and had to get a selfie with my tracks. Took me 15 mins to get from the bottom of the line back to the car. All in all the trip took me about 3 hours, had an awesome ski and got some great beta for Pacific peak. Its still a winter snow pack so the big lines are going to have to wait a little bite longer but it was a fun day to poke around! |
